Paul Klee was born near Bern, Switzerland. He was brought up in a musical family. His father was a german music teacher and his mother had trained to be a singer. Naturally, due to his parents, from an early age he was interested in music. He played the violin very well. The theme of music crowded his mind.
In 1898, he began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He studied under Franz von Stuck. Between 1901 and 1902, he travelled in Italy and enjoyed many classic arts. Seeing masterpices many with his own eyes made him rediscover something.
In 1906, he moved to Munich. He developed the personal relationship with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. At that time, they were the most avant-garde artists.
Paul Klee studied paintings such as Cezanne, Gogh, Manet, Goya, Rodin. And, he learned Japanese block prints.
In the early part of 1910s, Synthetic Cubism appeared on the scene in Paris. Of course Paul Klee also gained something from it. But he seemed to be interested in paintings as Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger.
In 1914 he visited Tunisia with August Macke and Louis Moilliet. He was impressed by the quality of the light there.
Between 1921 and 1931 Paul Klee taught at the German Bauhaus school of art and architecture.

Hans Arp / Jean Arp was born in Strasbourg. After he had studied in Weimar and Paris, he moved to Switzerland. He particiated in dadaism and Surrealism, and he joined the group of abstract artists. So it is difficult to classify him into which group.

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky was a Russian artist, and one of founders of abstract art. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood in Odessa. In 1886 he returned to Moscow.
His father was a rich merchant who liked art. Kandinsky was influenced by his father. But Kandinsky did not pursue a career as an artist all his life. At the University of Moscow he studied law and economics.
In 1896 he moved to Munich and studied first in the private school of Anton Ažbe and then at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munish. At that time, he was already 30 years old. That was a rather late start.
From 1906 to 1908 Kandinsky stayed in Paris and Berilin with Gabriele Muenter. He broadened his knowledge through this journey.
In 1909, he helped to found the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and became its president in 1909. In 1911, Kandinsky formed a new group called The Blue Rider with Franz Marc. In the next year, the group released a yearbook called The Blue Rider Almanac.
His style changed from concrete to abstract.
Later he was forced to move to Moscow in 1916. In 1921 he returned to Germany to attend the Bauhaus of Weimar. In 1926, he wrote "Point and Line to Plane". In 1933, the Nazis closed the Bauhaus. Then he moved to Paris where he spent the rest of his life.

Theo van Doesburg was a Dutch artist. He was active in a wide range of fields like writing, poetry and architecture. He taught himself painting. Originally, he drew pictures about human mind and emotion. In his 30s, he responded to new flow of paintings. After he was influenced by Kandinsky, he grew seriously involved with abstract.
In 1917, Theo van Doesburg met Piet Mondrian. They got along right. They founded the magazine De Stijl. In this magazine, they expressed Neo-Plasticism which abstracts entire life of humans. Later, in 1924, Theo van Doesburg launched a new concept for his art, Elementarism.

Robert Delaunay was born into a wealthy family in Paris. He received impulses from impressionism, Gauguin, neo-impressionism, fauvism. When he was young, he sought a new direction. Paul Cezanne was highly-influential. Robert Delaunay learned many things through the study of Paul Cezanne.
